LETTING THE TEXTILES LEAD
About the process
Our design process starts with finding clothing and fabrics made from natural fibers of high quality and in good condition. The kind of fiber, a garment’s design or a textile’s purpose will suggest its transformation. We let the textile lead the process.
Botanical printing
Botanical printing is the process in which plants are used to create colorful prints directly on cloth. Fresh or dried leaves, bark and flowers are used on cloth pretreated with a mordant (binder) and then heat processed to make beautiful prints.
Natural dyes
Natural dyes are colors that can be extracted from plants in water using heat. Pretreated cloth is then simmered in this dyebath creating natural colors.
Handloom Weaving
Weaving is done on various small handlooms. We use mostly organic, sustainably produced yarns from natural fibers, such as wool, cotton, linen, hemp and silk. The yarns may be colored first using natural dyes.
We are always learning, and knitting is our newest interest. So far our skills are basic but we’re enjoying the challenge!
Sewing
We sew clothes and bags and small pouches from vintage fabrics we collect, or clothes we no longer wear, or scraps from other projects. It is satisfying to create something new from something “old”. When using new fabric, we strive to find sustainably produced materials.
We also make textile artworks which may use any of the other processes described as well as hand stitching, quilting and embroidery.
